0.99.3.1 and so forth. a's and b's are more likely to confuse version comparison than help anything. Without going into detail about how version comparisons work, I'll just say that the goal is to eliminate ambiguity, and the easiest way to do that is to separate version/subversion info with dots and always go incrementally.
