(Bbabbled:

(B> Text files would need to be read and parsed only once after every
(B> modifications, the rest of the time the binary file being up to date it would
(B> be the only one read. This makes sens only for configuration files and on
(B> environements were space isn't critical (not cell phone and pda's). I don't
(B> think it would increase the bloat very much (since you'd have to parse the
(B> configuration file only after its modifications). However Raster knows what he
(B> is doing way better than I do and he does have some very good arguments.
(B
(Bit also makes it more complex. we have a fairly organised system of storing such
(Bdata and we use the same system for everything - so no need to use different
(Bways of getting the data, massaging and processing it etc. we kind of like our
(Bcompact way of doing things without the extra text convert to binary step and
(Bhaving to create text files to modify binary config's. anyway - the point is
(Byour problem wasn't "of the config isn't text" the real problem was another
(Bissue that needs fixing anyway that a text config would just have made an
(BEXPERIENCED unix user able to fix it more quickly - the non experienced ones are
(Bstill just as screwed. if we fix it for the non experienced ones it's a moot
(Bpoint then :)
(B
(B> And since I'm here my first CHI advice:
(B> Poping out/transparent menus are a reall treat however the user has to know
(B> they are there (I know this sounds a little silly but try to get your grand'ma
(B> to use your computer and you'll see what I mean). I think they should be
(B> expended when the application pops up and retract afterwards (I'm mainly
(B> thinking about entice's main theme).-Does everyone think this is sensible?
(B> Till
(B
(Boh god - of course.entice isn't meant to be a "easy to use for your grandma
(Bimage viewer" i hate those things - they fill my screen with widgets and crap
(Bthat isn't the image i'm looking at (actually entice has gone downhill it used
(Bto be a LOT more spartan - if you didn't have your mouse over one of the widget
(Bareas the ONLY thing on your screen was the image and nothing else. it made for
(Bthe most perfect photo slideshow as u didn't have any "crap" to disturb the
(Bphotos :)
