If you use 0.16.7.x make sure that it is at least 0.16.7.2.
0.16.7.x has a problem with transparency when starting up an Eterm on a
desk that hasn't been visited yet. This is fixed in 0.16.8 (CVS).
I don't recognize the other problems from your description.
Maybe wiping out ~/.enlightenment would fix some of those.
I also use E for daily usages: programming and other common stuffs.
What do you suggest ? try to reinstall better e16.7 ? or try e17 ? or
back to e16.5 ??
Being the e16 maintainer I of course recommend 0.16.8 :) I'll even fix
the bugs you may find. However, do read INSTALL and README.Migrate if
you switch to 0.16.8.
Try out e16.x, try out e17, use whatever you like/fits your needs best.
