First of all I´d like to thank you Ben for setting this up. Absolutely fantastic idea. We at Get-E.org have thought about setting up a mailing list too (IRC doesn´t always work that well once there are so many translators etc involved) - this sounds exactly like what we´d need. I´ve already joined the list (with my "real" email account, not this, so I will follow the list very closely - much more than I follow the other lists), but I would have some suggestions:
a.) That all staff (and users are welcome too) from all "ring" sites (edevelop, get-e, e, elivecd) would join and actively follow this mailing list.
b.) That all ring sites would have at least most of their critical announcements and discussions on this mailing list. This would promote transparency - right now the various sites are more or less closed entities without any windows. This should change. We need to get rid of the current "competition" between ring sites and the lack of transparency in how these sites actually work.
c.) This list should stay completely public, and users should be allowed to post as well.
--> This would mean that this list would have more traffic, but I honestly don´t think anyone actually minds that?
What I mean is, that we (get-e.org) would from now on have various internal discussions on this list - for example regarding all the translation management. Stuff that needs to be closed (for example theme-approvals in general - which are better handled on IRC), will of course stay private. In general though, things like site design, site graphics, translation work, user feedback and documentation work could all be mostly managed via this list. In addition to the rings sites being able to work more efficiently together, this would be good for the users too, as they would, from now on, have a direct way to contact us all at the same time. Currently for example if someone wants to contact us, the process of the mail actually getting to the right person usually takes a while.
I´ll post two or three threads to the E-web mailing list later this evening, so we can start up the discussion.
Regards,
Valtteri
