Start by copying ~/.e to some place safe, then remove ~/.e and ~/.ecore completely while E17 is not running. Start up E. If there is still no joy, completely uninstall E17, including the directories mentioned above, and install again from scratch. If all else fails, do all of the above, but from a fresh check out of cvs.
