It looks to me like its simply blending onto a black background.(Try it out in 
the gimp, create a black layer behind the tiff, it looks just like the jpg.
KDE's Kuickshow seems to do this with trans tiffs also.

To get what you want, you'd need to set the alpha of each pixel to 100%. i'm 
not sure if there's an easy way to do this with imlib. if not, you can always 
run through the pixel data and change the alpha.
