Thats a good start, but alt-click will still turn on global edit mode, no? In 
the alt-click action, you'd need to get the (topmost) gadman client currently 
under the mouse and set then turn it on.

This is when the user selects 'edit mode' from the menu, right? In that case, 
full on edit mode still make sense (to me at least).

Also, make sure you don't commit things with the function names indented like 
they currently are.

Other than that, looks good to me.
