After some discussion on IRC, I decided to go with ordinary ilist for now, without icons, but it's not perfect. There is enough space between the lines of text to drive a truck tbrough, there is a big space at the beginning of each line where the non existant icon should go, and the alternate line colouring is not a good look for just plain text.
I might add a "this is just a scrollable text widget" flag to ilist. With that flag turned on ilist will ignore icons, not waste space for icons, turn off the line colouring, and reduce the distance between lines.
