when i set it up on sf.net - things like uploading an image for a screenshot
required file write access. anything other than plain text article stuff ended
up needing.

yup - but you NEED one - sf.net provided NONE the www scritps had ZERO write
accesss anywhere.

EXACTLY! that was the problem. it is possible to put them into the db - but
they don't - and its highly inefficient to do so.
