as i said... i didn't touch the IMPLEMENTATION. we need to listen to BOTH fd's
(e.g. sockets) AND handles on win32. on *nix it's only fd's. i was just fixing
up the api and only as much implementation as necessary to back that api. what
WAS there before is STILL there. i'm not touching that - certainly not the
windows code because i won't be able to test it etc.
