To toss another out there, also Gradle, seems it maybe more robust in ways than Bazel or Buck. https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/native_software.html
It is also 100% Java. All you need is a JDK, or maybe just a JRE if not building a Java project. Still a JDK is less at times than installing python, or any deps, etc. Plus with gradle wrapper, gradlew. Its probably the only one I know that can download and run itself. That is no gradle installed, gradlew not only can handle that, but then passes any arguments to gradle. Like gradlew build, gradlew clean, etc. Probably one of the best build systems for that aspect alone. Gradle I use for any new Java projects. I had not considered it for others. I also have it building mostly from source. Just need to finish off some stuff for a cli. https://github.com/Obsidian-StudiosInc/os-xtoo/search?q=gradle&unscoped_q=gradle -- William L. Thomson Jr.
