More likely with locale settings than fonts. A poor font with good locale 
settings will merely display a missing character symbol (or a blank) for those 
characters it doesn't cover, rather than messing up the terminal. I suggest 
switching to the UTF-8 variant of your locale, which is normally set in 
environment variables. The locale command without options will show all the 
relevant variables, and
"locale -a" will give a list of all possible locales. They are likely setable in
/etc/sysconfig/locale, and personally I only set LANG and LC_ALL. glibc 
simulates the presence of the other 10 or so variables from LC_ALL.
