A poor font with good locale settings will merely display a missing character symbol (or a blank) for those characters it doesn't cover, rather than messing up the terminal. I suggest switching to the UTF-8 variant of your locale, which is normally set in environment variables. The locale command without options will show all the relevant variables, and "locale -a" will give a list of all possible locales.
