I disagree here. *.in files (like Makefile.in, foo.h.in or blah.pc.in) 
are file that are processed by configure. *.am files are the input files 
of automake and consequently *.ac files are the input files for autoconf.

That's right, besides maybe the feeling to do it right :). The only 
danger is that the autostuff folks tend to break compatibility even 
during minor version releases. I don't know, however, if they plan to 
drop support for configure.in.
