I just updated and noticed the icons bigger, switched the style to inset and
the rectangle was as high as the shelf, insted of a bit smaller as before.
FWIW, it's a 40px shelf, below everything, default theme and alternate style,
with an ibox, tclock and mixer gadget in it. No time now to test much more.
