The reasons of places are: to show your volumes, open a (customizable) fm, mount/umount them and show the usage...It just miss the activity stuff... ...good idea, todo++ ;) At the end I managed to fix places as is (extra module), no integration with efm, it can work 'standalone'. This perfectly fit my setup now: I use just places while leaving the whole efm module unloaded...it's the way I like it :) > >> About the way efm mount: >> The way e17 handle the unmount of device is quite odd to me (you know, >> e unmount the volume as soon as you close the last efm-win that use >> that volume) and this behavior is quite in conflict with the places > > this behaviour though is more correct. the idea of mounting the moment you > plug > in is not very smart - and having to manually say "eject" or "unmount" is not > very good. closing the last visible window for the device can implicitly > unmount without the user needing to know or care. the real issue here is the > linux/unix way of doing a filesystem. the fact that it can cache vast amounts > of data in ram and not be on disk presents a big problem for removable media. > reality is we should unmount as soon as we can to force changes to be written. > for efm this is when you close the device window. For example I don't like the mount/umount stuff and the fact that your device are shown as icon, I also prefer a clean desktop, without icons on it. >> Are we sure we want e17 behave in this way? Yes I know iPhone is crappy, it doesn't present as a thumb drive, but fuse is smart enough to show you 2 different volumes, one for the phone data and one for the apps and the apps data. > > but frankly - that's a lot of work to start doing all the fuse stuff, network > browsing, mounting etc... we used to have a perfectly working hal supoprt > layer > and then the rest of the linux world decided to kill it (though its still > floating around and replacements are not "there yet") and leave us with having > to try support 2 things. we have enough mess to fix here without worrying > about > fuse and friends. :) I will try to implement some fuse integration in places, if I will end up in something good we could then import that stuff in e. > >> I don't want this email to become too huge so I leave for a future >> mail other details and the discussion about the efm itself...that need >> loooots of discussion and code for a proper e17 release. >> >> bye >> >> DaveMDS >> >> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ >> Ridiculously easy VDI.
