ok - after it happening a few more times - borders go "bad" and stop rendering.. i suspect it simply is an async render done callback never coming back - being lost somehow... but it's random.... but once the window frame stops rendering... it doesn't come back. so i'm suspecting it'd be good to re-read the "i'm finished rendering" async code to see if there is a way for messages to be lost or never sent, or never picked up.
