Maybe add the following line just to be sure (or maybe your e-coding
style hooks are not correctly called):
(setq-default indent-tabs-mode nil)

In order to view the infamous tabs, I suggest you read:
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/WhiteSpace

(or maybe you should just use vim…)
