use -std=gnu99 in CPPFLAGS if compiler supports it
need to call AC_PATH_X to make sure have_x is set early enough and then
we need to not clobber it when checking for X11/X.h
cleanup and simplify ... this should also fix the preprocessor paste
error seen on x86
