Basically it's like switching from targeting libc5 to targeting glibc
2: the executables won't be able to run on XP because it lacks some
newer APIs (it's a bit more complicated than that but considering how
computer-literate Windows are it's probably very close).

So, less compatibility. Bad!

Except that it means more code is needed inside evil and it's code that
doesn't get many reviews. Also, XP has been EOL'ed for real by MS
for almost a year and no dev around the EFLs cares about it (or at least
to the point of spending time to maintain compatibility).

By the way, on win-builds.org's apache logs, I don't see browsers from
XP anymore in the top ones while I was seeing some less than a year ago
though. I've also seen people ask for XP compatibility in win-builds 1.5
as recently as last week so there's a demand (that one was for Xonotic).
