I seem to recall that this is theme-related, or can be. There's a
setting that you can change to define the number of columns, or is it
rows, that E shows. Try menustyles/menustyles.cfg and look at this item:

NORMAL_MENU_STYLE_VERTICAL("ROOT_IMAGE", "MENU", "MENU", "M1", "M2",
"M3", 20)

The "20" means show (20) thumbnail images and then start a new column.
Try a lower number...

This is pure speculation though !! :-)
