Try this in your X config file:

Option "Emulate3Buttons"

this must go in a section called InputDevice. If you press both buttons at the 
same time, it will act as a middle click.

And a good piece  of advice: get a mouse with a 3rd button and scroll wheel if 
your computer can handle it.

I still have it... it still uses gtk1.2, but I don't care.
