Well, that might sound stupid, but could it be that gmplayer is insalled in 
some place like /usr/local/bin that is not in the system standard PATH, but 
which is appended to the PATH variable in your .bashrc? If that is so, then
the 
program will only be found when using a console under X. If you want to
check 
that out, try running gmplayer when not in X, and see what kind of error 
message comes up.
