Hi! I had the msame problem.
I solved it this way: edit your .xinitrc file, and add this line: gnome-panel& I inserted it BEFORE the wm is launched. It works GREAT!!! One drawback: it looks like the gnome-deskguide-applet is no more. too bad. *sigh* At least I cannot find it any more on my distribution (SuSE 8.2). Please drop me an email if it works or not!
