I swear I tried that before. OK, maybe I didn't. :-/ Yes, thank you
very, very much, it worked.

What I know I did try was using the -promiscuous option with esd, which
is supposed to cause it to start unlocked. That had no effect. Ideally
I'd like it to be a global solution.

I can certainly appreciate the necessity for improved security and
reliability, but I think this level of restrictiveness borders on
paranoia. There are existing access controls in Unix/Linux that
are more than adequate. If someone feels they need this level of
control then they have serious configuration issues elsewhere. :-/
