Hi,

I checked out Erss from CVS recently to kick the tyres and give it a
spin... I've been using Snownews and wanted to see how Erss
compared. Everything compiled just fine, but some of the sample config
files cause the program to grind to a halt.

For example, running

erss -c bbc_science

works flawlessly, whereas

erss -c slashdot

gives me a window displaying the "Slashdot" title and a "Last update:"
line and then freezes. Ctrl-c from the terminal i started it from has
no effect. Moving the Erss window around fails to update it with the
contents of the desktop behind it. I have to "kill -9" the process in
order to stop it.

The difference between the config files that work and those that cause
the program to freeze appears to be the line:

  <item_description>description</item_description>

which, from the web page description, is supposed to enable a
tool-tip-like pop up. If a config file with this line in is used, the
program freezes. The only difference in the terminal output is:

erss info: reading "BBC Science" (1448 octets)...
erss info: reading "BBC Science" (1448 octets)...
erss info: reading "BBC Science" (2008 octets)...
erss info: disconnecting from news.bbc.co.uk...
erss info: connection information only displays on the first connect.

when it works, and:

erss info: reading "Slashdot" (1448 octets)...
erss info: reading "Slashdot" (1448 octets)...
erss info: reading "Slashdot" (2487 octets)...
erss info: disconnecting from slashdot.org...

before it freezes when it doesn't work.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Or anything I can
do to provide some debugging information? A quick perusal of the
source code didn't reveal any obvious debug code.

Any help gratefully appreciated,
B*B,
-Smoke.
