I compiled 16.7.1 (tarball from sourceforge), on SuSe 9.2 x86, on a dual Xeon.
The Genesis theme uses the mints font, and this font is really messed up in the window borders, but ok in the menus.
Do you have that font?
Is your LANG <something>.utf8? If so, try removing utf8.
I don't have the mints font, but for some reason I haven't figured out yet removing utf8 makes the window title show properly.
