Well, I use(and love) Debian too, (there is very good Debian DR17 compilation 
from cvs HOWTO on https://vogelweith.homeftp.net/Linux/e17_en.php) and if you 
use automake1.7(and ONLY 1.7) package, evrything runs well. I think this shoud 
be noted somewhere...

Offtopic: I played with E17 whole day (.deb packages from unofficial repository 
didn't work well for me) to make it work and it is finally fully operational... 
I was supprised how much...in development it is, but even now it is great! I 
hope it will be completed soon, may are all its developers enlightened !!! :)
