I would think you're out of main memory, so thunderbird is being pushed
into swap space - ie the program's memory is written to disk, and
pulled out again when requested; a VERY slow process compared to
keeping everything in main memory all the time. I'd recommend using a
low-memory WM (eg fluxbox) until you can buy more RAM, and don't have
too many apps open at once.
An almost certain way to tell if you're using swap space is that the
hard disk will be churning when you switch between windows, as each is
moved between the RAM and the HD whenever needed.
