Apart from the gpu, opengl, etc.. dependency issues that have been mentioned, there is a HUGE difference between E and Visa that can not be left unsaid: E is free!

remember? "free as in freedom".... By looking at these screenshots (from Visa) the feeling I get is...." oh, well, here comes another ms windows...", but i still remember what I said when I first saw Enlightenment: "WOOOOOOW!!!!!" and when I first saw E17 using true transparency through xorg: "WOOOOOOW!!!!!!". I am currently using E16 and it's been a few months since i last saw E17 and I can already guess what I am going to say when I see it's new improvements.......

Microsoft cannot afford to create a complete design revolution... their users would be lost.... and if there is one fear Microsoft does NOT want it's users to lose, is the fear of facing new things.

One last thing: common sense says that new software require better hardware, which is really quite a stupid way of understanding the whole thing and I am sure that this is going to change some day, I can only hope that it changes soon enough.....

thanks - but we are a long way off being as usable as vista. and we do much much
much less. :(

e17 doesn't even require opengl. that's optional and simply not used by e17
itself. you have to hack the code to enable it. all you see is rendered with the
cpu only - you need very little more than a basic 2d accelerated x server. no 3d
required at all.

the difference is vista has ms behind it. we have just a few of ourselves. i
think we all pine for the day we could work on e17 fulltime and we'd have maybe
a snowballs chance in hell then. as it stands we work in weekends/evenings when
we find time. we move slowly. very slowly.
