In there you have a script to update e17 from cvs *without* using portage, or by other words, when using any distro.
But there's also another script for gentoo users. But you can use the first one.
The script you could be interested in, are in fact 2 script: one for updating the cvs tree and another for compiling. (there's also a script for compiling a single package in case you need).
The script that uses portage (for gentoo users) has a interesting particularity: it checks (by package order) if each one was modified since your last download. If not, they are not compiled. When it finds a new (updated) package, the compiling process starts from that package onwards. It saves you compiling time, if that matters.
