Hello!
It seems that your locale is in utf-8, currently, eterm doesn't
handle that
encoding. You can switch to an non-unicode locale or use another
terminal
emulator that support unicode (urxvt, gnome-terminal...)

Thanx for your answer. The problem is now solved. I got the instruction
from this list to setting the shell variable LANG=C.
Now mc works ok.
