Really strange... What OS you are using? ( uname -a && cat /etc/release )
Do you trying to set/export GCC before configure?

check at config.log last ~100 lines, the reason for failure will
probably be there.
Anyway, if configure script gives you such error, something bad.
Either with autofoo stuff or with your system (permissions, libs,
includes, etc...)
