I use kinput2 in my environment (E16.7.2 + ex. Eterm 0.9.4, mozilla, etc):
$ ps awx | grep kinput2
1216 ? S 0:00 kinput2 -canna -cannaserver unix
1332 pts/1 S 0:00 grep kinput2
$
"kinput2 + wnn" generally works fine, too.
But I don't know for sure in E17 as I haven't used it yet.
