The gnome-desktop was mostly an example to show the possibility of combining parts of different desktopmanagers: since it is possible to combine e17 with desktop- and task bar programs of other dm's, I thought it had to be possible to run compiz (for the xgl effects) and e17 for all the remaining. I hoped there would be an option in E like --no-wm, to only start the desktop.
