The steps in the gentoo wiki worked for me regarding using your wheel mouse to set transparency: http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Xorg_X11_and_Transparency#transset-df But I usually leave composite off because i've noticed that with the nvidia drivers and composite enabled, i'll get random crashes every few days. XGL was stable for me but didn't use my Xinerama info so it just slowed me down.
