nothing is stopping a module from putting objects on the desktop canvas
- how do u think flame, rain, snow and dropshadow work? 

but the old gadget api will go - so modules, if they want to let you do this,
will need to DIY. it is rare to want to do this and the calendar is a weird
module. its useless when small - so it needs to be big. it:s basically a wall
poster calendar for your desktop and thus is in a completely different class of
display. that class of display will be becoming more manual as its 1. the
minority, 2. more restrictive on everyone else.
