Hi,
I had the exact same problem. On my system all I had to do was move the
e17 directories to the start of my PATH statement. On my system (Arch
Linux) it is loaded at startup by /etc/profile and the statement I
modified was this;

export
PATH="/opt/e17/bin:/opt/e17/lib:/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/bin"

Notice that I put the e17 directories at the start.
