It is now impossible to run entrance from inittab.. If I start runlevel 5, I get a strobe light, as entrance gets stuck in a loop starting X
the relevant entry; x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/entranced -nodaemon entranced -nodaemon works just fine if I run it by hand in a login shell, so this would seem to be an issue of an improperly initialized environment.
