You should get the latest xcompmgr from Xorg git - it has been patched 
to work correctly with GNOME Terminal or mrxvt or something that 
supports true transparency. It's also been more stable for me - if you 
need a binary or the source e-mail me and I'll send it to you. You could 
also check out ecomorph for a project that's trying to combine compiz 
and E17 together- see the itaskng page
