I solved a similar issue this weekend. I decided to get PulseAudio
working properly because I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it!
Anyway, I found that running 'pulseaudio --daemonize' on login got
PulseAudio working a treat. (I created a small .desktop file with this
command in to run on startup.)
Of course, Adam, since you've solved your problem this may not be of
interest to you, but others might find it helpful...
