NOW I know why I couldn't find it...  MY file manager is a console app mc
{midnight commander}. And it doesn't show me any icons.  I don't use gui
file managers (except when they are also web browsers, and then I don't
use them to browse local files...) So since I wasn't going to use the
durned thing It'd not surprising that I never looked at it's dag nabbed
config.

I have to say it would have taken me a long time to think of looking
inside a file manager config to affect the presence of icons on the
desktop when I don't even have a file manager open...

And your right I do want to turn off the hal icons there as well
