I can help you with a couple of these:

If your CD drive is defined in /etc/fstab, then it won't be visible to
the Places module. Comment out the relevant line, and it should start
working. (The places module takes its signals from the hardware
abstraction layer (HAL), but fstab overrides HAL.)

For the desktop icons, you need to configure the File Manager module
(efm). Left-click on the desktop, and select Settings->Settings Panel.
Select Files in the toolbar at the top of the dialog, and then File
Manager. Click Behaviour in the top of the new dialog, and uncheck 'Show
HAL icons on desktop'

It may be that Linux isn't detecting the iPhone properly when it's
plugged in, but I don't know anything about that. Neither do I know why
your hard drives aren't being shown.
