yes, it is smarter than a simple icon, but the reason I don't want icons
on the desktop is that most (all?) of the time they are hidden by a
window, and the places module doesn't make any difference in this case.

currently I have the places module along the upper edge, so it looks
like it was a transparent shelf, but for it to be accessible I don't
have to cover it with windows, so wasting some space (which on a 17"
display is never enough).
