Thanks, this is exactly the problem. However, mixer does control the volume, but the max-volume for mixer is about 25% of the actual max volume, and thus very quiet. Barely audible over the fan. Running gnome-config somehow resets the volume so mixer can adjust volume from mute to max. I noticed that enlightenment has my volume levels backwards. If the volume on mixer is set to max, the output volume is silent, while if mixer is set to minimum, output volume is max. I have two buttons on my laptop for volume control, and I had to reverse the key-mappings so they worked correctly
