Also on gentoo, using the enlightenment overlay, I get a -hal* USE flag when I 
try to emerge enlightenment (second from the end):

I find HAL useful in popping up any pluggable devices on the desktop for me to 
mount/open.  Is there an alternative to this (e.g. udev) if enlightenment is 
installed without HAL?
