I use KDM and some apps will cause a pop up asking for a decision to kill, or 
cancel the shutdown, etc. but others (like pidgin) are just killed without a 
pop up.

Personally I prefer the pop up because it informs me of apps that I forgot 
were running and just killing them without first saving work I was doing there 
would cause loss of data.
