Have you tried the E17 Places Module (http://code.google.com/p/e17mods/wiki/Places)? It is in the SVN at trunk/E-MODULES-EXTRA/places. Or if you use easy_17.sh (http://omicron.homeip.net/projects/#easy_e17.sh ) it is in e_modules_extra package list. For me places works very well, and I do have it in an IBar. You can set Places to open the file manager of your choice, so you don't have to use EFM if you don't want to. The only issue I have is that every time I restart e the size of the Places gadget very very small (as small as possible?) and I have to resize it make Places useful. Annoying, but worth it.
