I used a backup ~/.e and was able to arrive at a desktop.  The problem was 
that the cursor was invisible!  After a lot of effort trying to guess where the 
cursor was on the desktop before I clicked on it, I managed to deselect 
enlightenment and select X cursor.  Then it became visible again.  Phew!
