Hmmm...  My own thoughts.  As I researched this issue, I recalled that I
thought I had solved problem 1 (see my paragraph on problem #3).  And what I
stated in #3 is exactly what I did and it did solve problem #1.  However,
a recent change in pulseaudio requires a dbus connection -- and dbus seems
to requie the $DISPLAY variable to be set, why is why my solution isn't working
any more as I start Pulse prior to starting E.  Have to look for a place to 
put pulse at after X starts but before E...
