Did you accept the default configuration for hardware acceleration of 
the compositing functions during the initial setup?  If you did, log in 
with the default window manager and delete the ".enlightenment" 
directory from the home directory (note the initial period; it is a 
"hidden" file). Now log into Enlightenment and it should go through the 
initial setup routine.  Watch for the options for compositing and 
de-select the one for "hardware acceleration".

Hardware acceleration works with the fairly powerful ATI "Radeon" 
controller in my new Dell 15R "Special Edition" laptop but not with the 
ATI "Express 200" in my much older previous laptop.  It also does not 
work with the current Intel HD integrated video controller in my new 
dekstop system but this may be because it is configured as a dual 
monitor setup in "Zaphod mode" which is known to be buggy with the 
current kernel module.  Gnome-3 goes to "fallback mode" with this 
setup.  Software compositing in Enlightenment seems to work fine.
